My Review:

To be honest, I was skeptical going into this movie after watching Sivakarthikeyan’s previous films, ‘Mr. Local’ and ‘Seema Raaja’. Both were painful to watch and it also questioned Siva’s credibility to choose good scripts. After the failure of ‘Mr Local’ earlier this year, it was announced he was going to team up with the current rural-family drama specialist, Pandiraj, who was fresh from the success of ‘Kadaikutty Singam’.

‘Namma Veettu Pillai’ is a usual family drama and it doesn’t offer us anything new in terms of story or treatment. The director dittos his previous film’s template into this film and it works for most parts, with the bond between a brother and sister taking centre stage. Sivakarthikeyan easily slips into the role of a doting brother and a man torn apart by family politics. This is a good comeback for the actor who has proven that if he chooses the right scripts, he is a great performer. Aishwarya Rajesh effortlessly showcases her acting chops as the sister and in emotional scenes she tugs our heartstrings with her earnest performance. Samuthirakani and R.K. Suresh cakewalk their roles as usual, both in an extended cameo in the flashback. Soori and Anbukkarasu (Pandiraj’s son, who plays Soori’s son on-screen) provide the comic relief for the film with the latter overshadowing the seasoned comedian with his counter dialogues timed to perfection. Anu Emmanuel has nothing much to offer to the film but has performed well in her limited screen time. Natarajan Subramaniam has given a decent performance as Aishwarya Rajesh’s on screen husband who hates her brother’s guts. Legendary director, Bharathiraja, shows why he is still sought after in the industry. His acting prowess and dialogue delivery is a joy to watch. The rest of the cast do what’s asked of them.

The technical team has done a pretty awesome job. Music by Imman is up his usual alley of village concoction added to perfection, ‘Yenga annan’, ‘Un koodavae porakanum’ are the picks of the album. His background score for emotional and action scenes amp up the feelings for the scene, ten times more. One of my favourite cinematographer, Nirav Shah was behind the lens for this film and he brings out the rustic and colourful treat of a village backdrop beautifully.

My Verdict: Theatres | Stream | Skip

Sivakarthikeyan and Aishwarya Rajesh’s strong performances ticks this film off as a decent family entertainer but you can’t help but sense a feeling of déjà vu lingering from the director’s previous film. Till another review, Vind out!

My Rating: 3 / 5
